(Reuters) – The Murmansk branch of the emergency ministry stated on Sunday that a fire on Russia’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker and cargo ship was quickly put out. The ministry also reported on the Telegram messaging app that there were no casualties in the incident. The Murmansk region is located in Russia’s northwest and shares borders with Finland and Norway, as well as the Barents and White seas.
Prior to this update, the ministry mentioned that the fire had ignited in one of the cabins of the Sevmporput ship and affected an area of around 30 square meters (323 square feet). The ship, which has been in service since 1988 and underwent a significant upgrade a decade ago, is Russia’s sole nuclear-powered icebreaking transport vessel, as per the Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom.
