TRIPOLI, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Direct scheduled flights between Libya and Italy have resumed after a nearly 10-year pause with a Rome-bound flight taking off from the Libyan capital on Saturday. The flight, operated by Libya-based Medsky Airways, departed from Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport and arrived at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport. Medsky Airways announced on their Facebook account that they would offer roundtrip flights between Tripoli and Rome on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
The Libyan Ministry of Transport stated that a memorandum of understanding on civil aviation cooperation and air transport was signed by the civil aviation authorities of both countries. The signing of this agreement in Tripoli is expected to promote and support the operation of charter and regular flights by airline companies from both Libya and Italy, according to the ministry’s statement.
The European Commission imposed a ban in December 2014, prohibiting all Libyan airlines from operating in European airspace due to security concerns.
