TURIN, Italy (Reuters) – Five Italian railway workers lost their lives in a tragic incident near Turin, according to the state railway Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Rfi) on Thursday.
The accident occurred while the workers were engaged in track replacement outside the Brandizzo station, which lies on the Milan-Turin line, around midnight on Wednesday. They were struck by a train carrying wagons.
Police sources informed news agency ANSA that the train was traveling at a speed of approximately 160 kph (100 mph).
“Rfi expresses deep sorrow and extends its condolences and support to the families of the deceased workers,” said the company in a statement.
ANSA reported that two workers managed to narrowly escape the path of the freight train and emerged unharmed.
The train operator received immediate treatment for shock at the accident site before being allowed to return home.
