MELAKA: Five volunteers of a charity organisation here have teamed up to launch a kopitiam that will also feed the underprivileged community.
Spokesman for the group, Kent Tan Chow Teng said all of them met each other when carrying out charity missions and wanted to do something different when they decided to venture into the food and beverage industry.
“The dream team that came together after years of doing charity work and we decided to foster a joint venture due to the relationship that we built for all these years as volunteers.
“The kopitiam will be also a platform to hone our culinary skills that we learned while cooking for the needy as well as to deliver quality food and drinks to the community,” said the 31-year-old lawyer when met on Saturday(Sept 21).
Tan and four others Gan Meng Deng, 43; Lim Soon Hoon, 42; Thomas Lee Huey Ren and Yong Yaw Yoong, both 40, also decided to collectively name their kopitiam as “One Family” to reflect their closely-knit friendship.
The kopitiam at Plaza Semabok here will be opened by Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong and Melaka entrepreneur, cooperative development and consumer affairs committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin on Sunday (Sept 22).
Tan said the five decided to open a kopitiam as it’s a cultural icon of the nation Malaysia as well as portraying the camaraderie between the five.
He said 50 free meals will be distributed to the needy at the opening ceremony and the initiative will be continued on each Sunday, starting from next month.
“The free meals are sponsored by good Samaritans and will be distributed at breakfast time,” he added.
