Australian authorities in New South Wales have issued a warning for residents in parts of Sydney to move to higher ground due to the risk of flooding caused by heavy rains.
As of Saturday morning, 12 emergency evacuation orders were in place, including some in Sydney, which is home to over 5 million people. Officials reported dangerous and rapidly rising floodwaters in certain areas.
The State Emergency Service disclosed that 44 individuals had been rescued from floodwaters, with a staggering 4,128 calls for help received within the past 24 hours.
The agency stated, “Flood rescue teams, aviation assets, and rescue vehicles have been strategically positioned and are actively responding to incidents.”
The recent flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall that battered the southeast region of Australia on Friday, leading to nearly a month’s worth of rain pouring down on Sydney. Citizens were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors.
Sydney recorded 111 mm (4.4 inches) of rainfall in the 24-hour period up to Friday morning, which is slightly below the average April rainfall of 121.5 mm, according to data from the national weather forecaster.
