IPOH: Residents of Taman Klebang Putra 1 in Perak have set up a “Laman Merdeka” in their neighborhood field to commemorate National Month and showcase their patriotism. Klebang Putra 1 Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) chairman Dr Mohamad Azrul Azly stated that the idea arose from a discussion with residents who wanted a unique way to celebrate National Day this year. The “Laman Merdeka” display, which is almost 80% complete, involves 1,300 Malaysian flags.

Each year, the Klebang Putra 1 KRT distributes Malaysian flags to all households, but not all residents fly them. Therefore, the idea to set up the “Laman Merdeka” was conceived to display the national flags collectively,” stated Dr Mohamad Azrul in an interview with Bernama. The field was chosen as the location for the display due to its popularity among residents for recreational activities, especially in the evenings.

Director of “Laman Merdeka,” Mohd Rizal Mohd Rajab, explained that the project includes notable features such as an arch adorned with Malaysian flags, as well as replicas of a tank, KL Tower, and a traditional wau kite. These replicas have been constructed by residents using recycled materials like PVC pipes, plastic bottles, and tires.

To further enhance the celebrations of both National Day and Malaysia Day, a mini independence exhibition will be held at the field on September 10th from 8.30am to 12.30pm, according to Mohd Rizal. The exhibition will involve various organizations, including the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Health Ministry, the Perak State Archives, and the Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk).

Muhammad Husaini Abd Hadi, a 32-year-old cook at an offshore company, expressed his delight at being able to contribute to the establishment of the Laman Merdeka after celebrating National Day overseas for the past six years. He stated, “This is the first time I’ve participated in such activities with the residents here; we do everything together, which not only boosts our patriotic spirit but also fosters good relationships with our neighbors.”

Another resident, Syahrifah Haszreena Zulkifli, 36, believes that the Laman Merdeka initiative can help instill patriotism in the younger generation. She stated, “It also teaches our children the value of independence. The attractive display of flags here can enliven National Day celebrations,” she added. – Bernama
