SIBU: A student of SMK Bukit Assek here created history by winning the classical category of the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) violin competition in the United States.
As if was not enough, Imran Azim Iskandar also took home a silver medal each in the contemporary and original works categories as well as a bronze medal each in the jazz and open categories at the competition in Anaheim, California.
The Form 5 student attributed his success to the unwavering support from his family, teachers, and friends as well as his own determination.
He said the contest was very tough and challenging as all participants had put up a strong fight for the titles.
“At the beginning, I was intimidated by them but once I got onto the stage, I really felt that I could do it,” he said on arrival home at Sibu Airport on Monday (Aug 14).
Imran’s homecoming was marked by a warm reception from his family, friends, teachers and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
Offering advice to aspiring individuals treading a similar path, the young world champion emphasised the significance of honouring one’s parents’ guidance.
“All their decisions are for the best of you. So, keep doing what you like because when you do what you like, you will be able to enjoy it.
“Do it not only for yourself, but the family, the community and the country as well,” he said.
The teen’s father Iskandar Bujang expressed his excitement over his son’s remarkable achievement.
“Considering the formidable competitors he faced, we can consider him an underdog. His accomplishment was truly unexpected.
“I am elated and hopeful that he can inspire other young individuals in Sibu,” he added.
Iskandar also acknowledged that it has been challenging for Imran to strike a balance between his violin training and study.
“He is preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, his training time is quite limited. He only practices on weekends and on weekdays, he plays it for 30 minutes from 9pm to 9.30pm,” he added.
Despite these constraints, Iskandar trusts his son’s judgment and allows the junior to manage the time himself.
“We do not arrange his study or training schedule, we leave it to him to decide,” Iskandar added.
