(Reuters) – A former London police officer has been given a 16-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a woman and a teenage girl. These cases have further damaged public trust in the city’s police force.

Adam Provan, aged 44, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, as well as an additional eight years on extended license. He committed multiple rapes over a period of eight years against a 16-year-old girl and a female police officer.

Louisa Rolfe, Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, stated, “I am sure the public will be as shocked and revolted at Provan’s offences as we are here. He abused his position as a police officer to win the trust of both these women. His actions are utterly deplorable.”

All these crimes were committed while Provan was still serving as a police officer.

Rolfe mentioned that the force is currently reviewing Provan’s history within the Metropolitan Police in order to “fully understand whether we could have acted sooner to bring him before the courts, or have stopped him from joining the police.”

Britain’s largest police force is facing pressure to reform and address the widespread public concerns about its officers. Earlier this year, an independent review revealed that the force is institutionally racist, misogynistic, and homophobic, and it has failed to police itself.

This review was commissioned in 2021 after a serving officer was sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a young woman.

The public outrage following that particular case has brought to light several other instances of criminal behavior and misconduct within the police service.
