GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang DAP leader Teoh Teik Huat has passed away aged 77 following a lengthy illness.

According to an online news source, Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao Leung stated that Teoh died on Sunday (July 14) morning in Perth, Australia, where he had been living with his children.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Teoh held roles as a state party leader, a Member of Parliament, and an assemblyman before moving to PKR with other DAP members.

Gooi described Teoh as a close associate of his father, Gooi Hock Seng, who represented Bukit Bendera in Parliament from 1982 to 1995.

Teoh served as the MP for Bagan from 1986 to 1990 and as the assemblyman for Pengkalan Kota and Paya Terubong between 1982 and 1995.

Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Teoh influenced his own understanding of local constituency matters and political campaigning techniques.

“He was an earnest party leader and a dedicated politician,” Chow said.
