Spain’s former King Juan Carlos has successfully defended himself against a £126 million ($154 million) lawsuit brought by his ex-lover, Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn. Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn accused Juan Carlos of orchestrating a campaign of harassment when she refused to return millions of euros to him. The 85-year-old ex-monarch has always denied these claims of harassment.
The lawsuit alleged that Juan Carlos was responsible for threats, surveillance, and intimidation starting from 2012. His lawyer, Adam Wolanski, stated in a hearing at London’s High Court in July that Juan Carlos emphatically denies ever harassing Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn.
Juan Carlos requested the court to dismiss Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn’s case, arguing that there was no viable claim of harassment against him. On Friday, Judge Rowena Collins Rice ruled in his favor, stating that the lawsuit lacked reasonable grounds.
Judge Collins Rice remarked, “No sufficient basis is provided for understanding the evidence that might be expected at trial to provide a real prospect of the claimant succeeding on this claim.”
Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn expressed her disappointment with the decision in a statement and stated that she is considering all options moving forward. At the time of reporting, Juan Carlos’ British lawyers had not provided a comment on the ruling.
