PARIS (Reuters) – The French government is increasing its alert level for terrorist threats to the highest level in response to the recent shootings in Moscow, announced Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on Sunday after a meeting with top security and defense officials alongside President Emmanuel Macron.
Attal shared on social media platform X that this decision, made just months before the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, was made “in light of the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the (Moscow) attack and the threats directed towards our nation”.
France employs a three-tiered system for terror alerts, with the highest level being activated in the aftermath of an attack either within France or abroad, or when there is deemed to be an imminent threat of one.
At this level, heightened security measures are implemented, including increased patrols by armed forces in public areas such as train stations, airports, and religious sites.
