French farmers continued their protests nationwide on Saturday, stating that the government’s actions were insufficient to address their demands for better pay and living conditions.

The government backed down on plans to gradually reduce subsidies on agricultural diesel and introduced other measures to alleviate the financial and administrative burdens faced by many farmers.

The FNSEA, France’s largest farming union, vowed to persist with their protests, with many farmers maintaining roadblocks along motorways and main roads on Saturday.

“The measures announced by Attal are not enough, they will not help our cash flow,” said farmer Natacha Guillemet in an interview with BFM TV.

Some farmers followed through on their threat to block roads around Paris.

Additionally, demonstrators in the northern French town of Beauvais held a silent march to honor farmers who have died in recent years, with some having committed suicide due to their stressful working conditions.

France ranks as the European Union’s leading agricultural producer, and the protests by French farmers mirror similar action taken in other European countries like Germany and Poland. Many demonstrators argue that they are suffering from the effects of globalization and foreign competition.
