Researchers have found that children’s use of tech devices is having an impact on their cognitive functions. A team of experts analyzed more than 30 studies published over the past 23 years to better understand the long-term effects of screen time on children.

They found that while television and video games can have negative effects on children’s brain function, they can also have positive effects, particularly in terms of learning and concentration.

The study authors recommend that policymakers support families in optimising children’s use of tech devices, focusing on content that has positive effects on the brain rather than limiting screen time, which can lead to conflict.

The review of 33 studies, published between January 2000 and April 2023, used neuroimaging technology to measure the impact of digital technology on the brains of over 30,000 children under 12, taking into account all types of digital experience, from games to movies to internet use.

Published in the journal Early Education And Development, this research reveals that digital activities are having a significant impact on the shape and functioning of children’s brains, both negative and positive.

While six studies suggest that digital experiences could be beneficial to children’s brain functionality, the team also reports a large number of negative effects on children’s brains, pointing to changes in different areas linked to various brain functions.

The researchers explain that these digital experiences at a young age could harm cognition, influencing brain function, problem-solving, intelligence scores, brain volume, visual processing, and intellectual cognitive functions.

The experts do not call for a limit on screen time, but instead urge policymakers to focus on implementing programmes and initiatives to promote content that is more beneficial to children’s brain development.

They emphasize the need for policies grounded in empirical evidence to safeguard and enhance brain development in children, offering resources and incentives for the creation and examination of digital interventions aimed at bolstering brain growth in children.

However, the researchers also highlight the need for further research into the impact of screens on the brain functions of this young audience. – AFP Relaxnews
