President Ali Bongo of Gabon, who appeared to be under house arrest, released a video on Wednesday, asking the international community to show support for him and his family. The video, widely shared online, was confirmed as authentic by BTP Advisors, a PR firm that has worked with Bongo on his election campaign.
Bongo spoke in English from a richly furnished state room and revealed that he and his family had been arrested by the people. He expressed concern about the wellbeing and whereabouts of his son and wife, stating that he was unsure about the current situation. He urged friends around the world to “make noise” on his behalf.
Despite being under arrest, Bongo appeared well-dressed and showed no signs of mistreatment. His composed manner and occasional pauses conveyed the urgency of his message.
Military officers had previously announced on national television that they had taken control of the country and placed President Bongo under house arrest. They also reported the arrest of his son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, and others. The officers declared the annulment of the results of the disputed election, including Bongo’s proclaimed victory.
If successful, this coup would mark the eighth in West and Central Africa since 2020 and would bring an end to the 56-year rule of the Bongo family. The election held on Saturday was highly contested, leading to the current turmoil.
