The Taurus missiles, known for their range of 500 km (310 miles), are intended to enhance Ukraine’s strategic defense capabilities. However, an official decision on the matter is yet to be made.
This revelation comes in the wake of Germany’s defense minister’s recent statement, indicating that Berlin is not currently planning to provide Ukraine with the Taurus missiles, emphasizing that these weapons are not their immediate priority.
A spokesperson from the German Ministry of Defense reiterated on Monday that Germany’s position remains unchanged in this regard.
Yehor Chernev, the head of Ukraine’s delegation at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, conveyed the significant development through a Facebook post. Chernev highlighted the diligent efforts undertaken to establish a support group in collaboration with German parliamentarians, resulting in this breakthrough.
He expressed hope for an official decision to follow.
Ukraine’s pursuit of long-range weaponry is rooted in its aspiration to counter the threat posed by Russia, which has employed long-range missile attacks to inflict damage on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
The Taurus cruise missiles would potentially provide Ukraine with a means to strike back at such threats effectively.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community closely watches these developments to gauge their implications for the ongoing regional dynamics.
