Germany has revealed plans to prolong its border checks with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in an effort to manage a surge in migration and combat human trafficking until Dec. 15, as stated by a spokesperson for the interior ministry on Monday.
The European Commission will be notified of the extension by Berlin, the spokesperson confirmed during a regular press conference held in the city.
The ministry is of the opinion that the fixed police measures at the Polish border should remain in place, particularly emphasizing that these measures have resulted in the preventions of approximately 1,100 unauthorized entries since they were put into effect on Oct. 16.
In response to a significant increase in initial asylum requests this year, Germany had declared the implementation of stricter control measures at its land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
