ACCRA, July 14 (Xinhua) — Ghanaian health authorities said on Sunday that they have confirmed nine cases of dengue in the Eastern Region.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) said in a statement that it has received confirmation from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) that samples from patients tested positive for dengue.

The GHS said the national surveillance team had detected malaria-like illnesses in some districts of the Eastern Region that were not responding to the recommended malaria treatment.

“Samples from the patients were sent to the NMIMR for testing, and nine of them have been confirmed as dengue and are being managed as non-severe cases at home,” said the statement.

The GHS added that a team of specialists from the national level has joined the regional team to conduct detailed outbreak investigations.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted from mosquitoes to humans, which can cause symptoms such as fever, nausea, body aches, and headache.
