KUALA LUMPUR: Companies linked to GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISB) have never made any payments for business zakat (tithes).

The Selangor Zakat Board announced on Saturday (Sept 28) that over 20 GISB-linked companies have never paid zakat and the board could not determine the amount owed because it had never received any information about the company’s assets and liabilities.

It said legal action could be taken against GISB for failing to pay zakat under the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003, which provides penalties of imprisonment and fines for those who deliberately avoid paying zakat.

Previously, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that based on cooperation with the Inland Revenue Board, it was discovered that the GISB network had never paid any business taxes.

He said this corroborates investigations conducted by the police under the Income Tax Act 1967.

The Selangor government had taken firm action by ordering the closure of all GISBH premises in the state and seizing their assets.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he would personally announce the total number of premises, including shelters and religious schools associated with GISB.
