(Reuters) – Italian golfer Matteo Manassero clinched his first victory on the DP World Tour in 11 years at the Jonsson Workwear Open held at Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg on Sunday. His final round score of 66 secured him a three-shot win, finishing the tournament on 26 under-par.

After losing his tour card in 2018, Manassero returned to the tour for the first time in five years. A standout performance in the second round, where he shot a career-best 61, set him up for victory. His nearest competitors, South Africans Shaun Norris and Thriston Lawrence, along with England’s Jordan Smith, finished tied for second place.

As the tournament came to a close amidst darkening skies due to a delay caused by thunderstorms earlier in the day, Manassero reflected on his journey in the sport. Despite holding the record for the youngest winner on the DP World Tour at just 17 years old, his recent wins have been few.

Manassero, who claimed the BMW PGA Championship in 2013, has had only seven top 10 finishes since then. Five years ago, he took a break from the game but returned with determination to succeed. “I won’t be able to reflect for a while, but it is the best day of my life on the golf course,” Manassero said.

“It has been a crazy journey but in the last few years I knew I was getting back on track,” he added. Despite his own strong performance during the final round, Manassero acknowledged the impressive play of his competitors. “Golf is such a difficult game, I am just so happy to be here now. I played well today, but the guys behind were playing some incredible golf, and every time I looked at the leaderboard it was a new name with more birdies.”
