Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has criticized the government’s “ad hoc solutions” for food security issues, stating that they are inadequate. He called on the government to develop a comprehensive action plan to address the shortage of local rice supplies and ensure that Malaysians always have access to food. Muhyiddin emphasized the need for stricter enforcement measures to prevent manipulation of the local rice supply chain. He also suggested increasing rice stockpiles and local food production to address the problem. The former prime minister believes that the current ad hoc measures do not guarantee affordable food prices or solve the scarcity of local white rice supplies, which has persisted for a long time.
Muhyiddin urged the government to take the issue seriously, as it could potentially lead to a larger crisis in the future. He highlighted the impact of climate change on food exports globally, including rice, and warned that reduced food exports from countries affected by climate change could affect Malaysia’s food supplies. Given Malaysia’s reliance on food imports, the country needs to address this vulnerability.
