The government’s initiative to boost the country’s agricultural output will include a targeted urban agriculture programme, announced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Selangor.
Highlighting the success of urban farming initiatives in Singapore, Anwar proposed adopting similar strategies in urban and suburban areas with limited land, starting with Kuala Lumpur.
Anwar instructed the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry along with other relevant ministries and agencies to present suitable plans for the programme within a month.
Emphasizing the importance of urban agriculture, particularly for the urban poor, Anwar urged for a focus on enhancing agricultural activities in urban areas alongside the existing efforts in agriculture.
Speaking at the Malaysia Madani dialogue session in Kuala Selangor, Anwar also called for special additional allocations in this field to support and promote urban farming initiatives.
More details on the implementation of the urban agriculture programme are expected to be revealed soon as the government ramps up its efforts to address the country’s agricultural output.
