PUTRAJAYA: Extremely unhappy with incidents involving cyberbullying, the Prime Minister wants authorities to take action against these online aggressors, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the issue has caught Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s attention, who also directed for more effort to be taken to put a stop to cyberbullying.

Fahmi said he updated the Prime Minister and ministers on the issue at the Cabinet meeting on Friday (July 12), including on the recent incident where a woman, who was believed to be a victim of cyberbullying, was found dead in her apartment.

“I informed the Cabinet on the ministry’s plans to address the issue, including reviewing existing laws such as the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“We will also be looking if there is a need to create a new law to look into the issue. There is a survey previously done (on cyberbullying) and we will review it to see if it can be presented in Parliament or if it needs to be improved,” he told a press conference.

Fahmi said that the Cabinet was also briefed on plans to have a nationwide campaign to increase awareness on online safety, including cyberbullying and personal data safety.

“It is not just that we want to tackle cyberbullying. We also want to ensure the safe use of fast and wide internet usage, especially among children,” he said.
