In a recent gathering, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that despite the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) holding a large majority of state seats, there is a system in place to keep the coalition in check.
Abang Johari emphasized that having a majority does not mean the end of democracy and that there is a culture of checks and balances within the coalition. He made these remarks at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) 65th anniversary and Chinese New Year dinner on Saturday (Feb 18).
He also highlighted that the state revenue has experienced significant growth, stating that the revenue was around RM8 billion six years ago, then grew to RM11 billion in 2022 and RM13.3 billion in 2023 even after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Abang Johari praised SUPP for remaining relevant in Sarawak’s politics, noting that the party, together with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB), formed the first coalition government in the country.
He also mentioned that the coalition is expanding with the addition of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
