Two people were killed in a bear attack in Banff National Park, according to a statement issued by Parks Canada.

Parks Canada received an alert on Friday night from a GPS device indicating a bear attack within Banff National Park. The attack took place in the Red Deer River Valley, west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch. Due to adverse weather conditions, helicopters could not be used, so the response team traveled to the location by ground overnight.

Upon arriving at the scene, the response team discovered two dead individuals. The bear, which showed aggressive behavior, was euthanized by the team. As a precautionary measure, an area closure has been put in effect for Red Deer and Panther valleys. The closure will remain in place until further notice, as stated by Parks Canada.

Banff National Park is home to both grizzly and black bears and is a popular destination for over four million tourists annually.
