Guinea’s self-proclaimed military leaders have announced the dissolution of the current government and the appointment of a new one, according to the presidency’s secretary general in a recorded statement on Monday.

Since a junta seized power in a September 2021 coup, the West African country has been under military rule.

ECOWAS, the main economic and political bloc in the region, has been pressuring the junta, along with other juntas in West Africa, to hold elections within a reasonable timeframe and restore civilian rule.

Both parties agreed on a 24-month transition timeline in October 2022.

The presidency’s secretary general, Amara Camara, unexpectedly announced the dissolution of the government without providing a reason for the decision. He stated in the pre-recorded video, posted on the presidency’s social media channels, that directors of the cabinet, secretary generals, and their deputies would be in charge until a new government was formed.

The consequences of the dissolution are reliant on the makeup of the new government that is formed.
