(Reuters) – Three-times Olympic gold medallist Gabby Douglas has successfully recovered from COVID-19, which had delayed her return to competition in preparation for the Paris Games this year. The American athlete, who won gold medals in the 2012 Olympics in individual and team events, took a break from competitive gymnastics after the 2016 Rio Games to focus on her mental well-being. Now, at 28 years old, she has resumed training with the goal of making the squad for the upcoming Paris Games.

In an Instagram post, Douglas expressed her relief at being “COVID free and finally on the mend,” thanking her supporters for their messages of healing and love. She is now eager to get back to work and pursue her athletic goals.

Unfortunately, the virus prevented Douglas from participating in the Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky last weekend, which marked the beginning of the U.S. domestic gymnastics season. However, she still has opportunities to secure a qualifying spot for the U.S. Championships in late May, potentially through the national team camp, the American Classic, or the U.S. Classic.

Despite these setbacks, Douglas remains determined to compete at the highest level and showcase her skills on the international stage. Her resilience and dedication to the sport have inspired fans around the world, who are eagerly anticipating her return to competition.

With her strong work ethic and commitment to success, Douglas has proven time and time again that she is a formidable competitor in the world of gymnastics. Her ability to overcome challenges, both physical and mental, sets her apart as a role model for aspiring athletes everywhere.

With the support of her fans, coaches, and fellow athletes, Douglas is poised to make a triumphant return to the sport she loves. Her journey to the Paris Games is filled with determination and passion, and she is ready to take on whatever challenges come her way.

As she looks ahead to the upcoming months of training and competition, Douglas remains optimistic about her prospects and confident in her abilities. Her comeback story is one of perseverance and strength, serving as an inspiration to all who follow her career.
