TASEK GELUGOR: Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, the president of the PAS party, has cited DAP’s interference in matters involving Islam and the Malays as one of the main reasons for the party’s decision to sever ties with them.
Abdul Hadi explained that multiple disagreements on various issues, including Islam, the reinstatement of local council elections, and the mistreatment of certain states, led to the decision. He emphasized that PAS opposed the proposal to reintroduce municipal elections, which were abolished after the May 13, 1969 incident due to tensions between racial groups.
“Suddenly, they (DAP) want to reintroduce municipal elections. PAS disagreed with the inclusion in our joint manifesto,” Abdul Hadi stated during his speech at the Ceramah Mega PN Best on Tuesday night (July 1).
The decision to sever ties with DAP was brought to light by remarks made by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who questioned PAS’s love-hate relationship with DAP, with whom they had worked as political allies for 14 years in Kedah and Perak under two coalitions since 2008. Saifuddin Nasution asked PAS to explain the legality of their cooperation.
In response, Abdul Hadi indicated that PAS could not agree with DAP’s promotion of secularism as part of their ideology. He clarified that while they used to collaborate on other issues, they eventually parted ways due to disagreements on fundamental matters.
