Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has urged Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) to maintain its strong collaboration with other component members of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). As a key partner in GRS, Hajiji believes that PBS can further enhance the coalition’s appeal to the people of Sabah.

Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, expressed his appreciation for PBS’ important role in solidifying the ruling state coalition. These sentiments were shared during a meeting with the PBS leadership at the Chief Minister’s Seri Gaya official residence in Kota Kinabalu on July 25. The discussion took place amidst recent discussions of a potential merger between PBS and Sabah STAR.

Leading the PBS delegation was party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister and state Local Housing and Government Minister. Other members present at the meeting included the two other deputy presidents of PBS, namely Datuk Jahid Jahim and Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai, secretary-general Datuk Julita Majungki, treasurer-general Datuk Lu Kim Yen, vice presidents Datuk Ruslan Muharam and Hendrus Anding, as well as assistant secretary-general Jonnybone Kurum and assistant treasurer-general Lo Su Fui.

Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, the information chief of PBS, emphasized the party’s commitment to working closely with the other component parties of GRS to strengthen the coalition. Meanwhile, Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan had previously mentioned the possibility of merging with PBS, citing potential mutual benefits for both parties. He highlighted that discussions regarding a merger had taken place prior to the last Sabah polls in 2020.

Nevertheless, Gunsalam stated that PBS is not rushing into any merger talks with Sabah STAR, as they are currently focused on continuing their collaboration with Kitingan’s party within the GRS coalition. He stressed that PBS is prepared to work together with Sabah STAR and other parties in the coalition.
