A high court in Pakistan has temporarily halted the trial of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on charges of illegally selling state gifts, according to his party and local media sources. The halt occurred after the high court requested a lower court to examine whether the legal complaint filed against Khan by the country’s election commission constituted a criminal proceeding, as reported by local news outlet Geo TV. Khan’s legal team had contested the commission’s complaint. Farrukh Habib, Khan’s spokesperson, praised the decision made by the higher court.
The trial, which is currently in its final stage, pertains to an inquiry conducted by the election commission. The commission found Khan guilty of unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
