In Dublin, Simon Harris has made history by becoming Ireland’s youngest prime minister. At just 30 years old, his meteoric rise to power has been over two decades in the making. Back in 2003, when Harris criticized the government in his local County Wicklow newspaper at the age of 16, he was already known as a local activist.

Harris’ journey to political leadership began when he left university at 20 to work as a political aide. By 22, he was elected as a councillor, then as a member of parliament at 24. Just before turning 30, he was appointed to the cabinet, where he played a significant role in guiding the country through the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frances Fitzgerald, Harris’ first boss and former Irish Deputy Prime Minister, remembers his eagerness and intelligence even at a young age. She was impressed by his dedication to working in politics, an uncommon passion for a 20-year-old.

Having been involved in politics to advocate for support for his autistic younger brother, Harris founded an autism awareness charity at 15, which he describes as a defining experience in his life. Fitzgerald emphasizes Harris’ unwavering belief in the political system as a means to drive change.

Niall Collins, a junior minister from coalition partners Fianna Fail, praises Harris for his work ethic and attention to detail. According to Collins, Harris dedicates himself to his work tirelessly, demonstrating a commitment to making a difference.

As Harris assumes office with limited time before the next general election, his main challenge will be regaining support for his party, Fine Gael, against the dominant opposition Sinn Fein. Recent polls show a decline in support for Sinn Fein, presenting an opportunity for Fine Gael and its allies to secure re-election.

Despite being part of a three-party coalition government, Harris may need to navigate alliances with independent candidates to secure his position. Finian McGrath, a former colleague of Harris, commends his willingness to compromise and build relationships across party lines.

Harris faces pressure to steer Fine Gael back towards its traditional center-right position while balancing social progress. He has emphasized the party’s centrist stance, citing his role in the 2018 referendum to repeal the abortion ban as an example of progressive policies.

While some speculate about a potential shift to the right for Fine Gael under Harris’ leadership, Fitzgerald believes he will maintain the party’s commitment to social progress. She describes Harris as adaptable and pragmatic, unlikely to veer far from the party’s current position.

Despite the challenges ahead, Harris’ supporters commend his dedication, intelligence, and willingness to collaborate across party lines. As he embarks on his tenure as Ireland’s prime minister, all eyes are on Harris to see how he will uphold his values and lead the country forward.
