In Port-au-Prince, Haiti, heavy gunfire erupted near the national palace on Friday, as reported by news agency EFE. This violence comes amidst political unrest triggered by the absence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
On Sunday, Haiti declared a state of emergency following increased fighting, the escape of inmates by armed gangs, and the displacement of over ten thousand people. During this time, Henry was in Kenya negotiating a deal for an international force to combat Haiti’s gangs.
The United States urged Haiti’s prime minister to hasten the political transition as armed groups sought to remove him from power.
Haiti’s interim leader, Henry, arrived in Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
