PETALING JAYA: Lembaga Urus Air Selangor’s (LUAS) says it has contacted authorities in Perak following the detection of high turbidity levels at Sungai Bernam on Saturday (Aug 24).

“We have informed the Perak state authorities over the incident and are conducting thorough checks and investigations into identified areas involving Sg Slim, Sg Bil, and Sg Geliting in Perak,” it said in a Facebook post.

LUAS said based on its observation and information from authorities in Perak, it was confirmed that the turbidity issue stemmed from heavy rainfall and water surge in the upstream areas of Sg Slim and Sg Geliting approximately 30km to 40km away.

“The high rainfall and water surge incident at Sg Slim and Sg Geliting eventually caused the waterflow to reach Sg Bernam in Selangor, resulting in an unusually high level of turbidity compared to normal days,” it said.

It said the current situation at Sg Bernam has shown a positive downward trend in turbidity readings, although at a relatively slow rate due to the high volume of sediment flow from the water surge incident.

“The LUAS and Air Selangor teams are on-site closely monitoring the current situation at Sg Bernam,” it added.
