PUTRAJAYA: Around 15% of police housing quarters nationwide are in a state of disrepair and cannot be lived in, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said that of the current 64,000 police quarters nationwide, 81% are in a hospitable condition while 15% are completely uninhabitable.

“These abandoned units have issues like leaking roofs and pipes, floors completely covered in dirt and even kitchen cabinets left broken

“A good number of them also have toilets or wiring that no longer work,” he said in his speech at the monthly general meeting of his ministry here on Monday (Sep 30).

He added that another 5% of quarters were in need of minor repairs and then said that any additional allocation for police officers’ welfare would be prioritised to be used for repairing these housing quarters.

“We will aim to fix up the 15% of inhospitable units first and then spend any remaining funds to patch up the less than 5% of units which are in need of only minor repairs.

“This is to ensure the welfare of our officers as we understand how financially difficult it can be for them if they are forced to pay for rent somewhere,” he added.
