In New York, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez testified in his own defense at his U.S. trial for drug trafficking charges. He claimed that he worked to combat drug trafficking and organized crime during his time in public office.

During his tenure as president, Hernandez mentioned that he pushed for laws to strengthen public security institutions in Honduras. He specifically highlighted the reform to the constitution that allowed for the extradition of Hondurans involved in drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime.

Under questioning by his lawyer, Raymond Colon, Hernandez emphasized his efforts to fight against drug-related crimes and his commitment to improving security in the country. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial.

Prosecutors are set to cross-examine Hernandez, who remains firm in his not guilty plea. Throughout his presidency, Honduras received substantial U.S. assistance in the form of anti-narcotics funding and security aid.

Former President Donald Trump supported Hernandez’s tough stance on drugs and migration, praising his efforts to combat trafficking. Despite this, federal prosecutors alleged that Hernandez was collaborating with traffickers and accepting bribes to facilitate the transportation of cocaine to the United States.

Witnesses in the trial, including convicted drug traffickers, have testified about the bribes paid to Hernandez. His defense team has criticized the prosecutors for relying on testimonies from criminals seeking revenge for his anti-drug policies.

If convicted on all charges, Hernandez could face a minimum sentence of 40 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence. The trial, which began two weeks ago, continues to unfold with intense scrutiny on Hernandez’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

Reported from New York by Luc Cohen, the trial sheds light on the complex relationship between Hernandez’s administration, drug trafficking, and the challenges of combating organized crime. The case has captivated public attention as it raises questions about political corruption and criminal activities within the highest levels of government.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Hernandez remains determined to prove his innocence and maintain his reputation as a leader who worked diligently to address the country’s security concerns. The outcome of the trial will have significant implications for Honduras and the broader efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
