SEREMBAN: A 38-year-old housewife lost more than RM200,000 in an online part-time job scam.
Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the victim lodged a report on Wednesday (July 31) upon realising that she had been duped.
“The victim saw a part-time job offer on the Telegram messaging app and began communicating with a stranger.
“She then decided to join the scheme and transferred the money into several accounts via 19 transactions,” he said in a statement.
Syndicates involved in such dubious schemes usually lure their victims by getting them to pay for goods purchased on ecommerce platforms first in return for commissions.
However, the victims eventually end up losing both their savings and are also not paid their commissions.
ACP Hatta said the victim used her savings and borrowed money from her family members to participate in the scheme.
She transferred the money between June 4 and July 27.
“I would again like to remind the public to exercise caution whenever you are offered part-time jobs online,” he said adding that they should first verify this before accepting any offer.
The public can also call the police’s Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599 for additional information.
