Advancements in artificial intelligence are set to enhance the capabilities of camera sensors, particularly those in smartphones. AI is not only capable of recognizing specific faces or objects, but it can also help optimize power usage and enable the capture of images that are currently invisible to the naked eye.

According to Business Korea, South Korean companies Samsung and SK hynix plan to utilize AI in their future image sensors. Samsung aims to launch the first sensor capable of capturing the invisible by 2027. But what exactly does “invisible” mean in this context?

The term “capturing the invisible” refers to the potential of capturing things in an image that are typically not visible to the human eye. This could include infrared, ultraviolet, thermal imagery, and possibly even X-ray image capture.

While some may imagine the ability to see through certain materials, the initial benefit of this technology is expected to be improved image quality in low light conditions. Integrating an AI chip into a photo sensor or camera can also help optimize power consumption.

These advanced sensors have applications beyond smartphones, including in industries such as automotive and medical. However, Samsung’s roadmap indicates that concrete applications are not expected until 2027.

Samsung is looking to further push boundaries in sensor development by aiming for a resolution close to that of the human eye, possibly exceeding 500 megapixels, for future humanoid robots. The company’s current record stands at 200 MP on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. – AFP Relaxnews
