LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — Hurricane Idalia has entered the Gulf of Mexico and hit Florida with devastating consequences.
Florida experienced the landfall of Idalia as a Category 3 hurricane, marking the first occurrence of a major hurricane entering Apalachee Bay since record-keeping began in 1851, announced the U.S. National Weather Service office in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida.
Evacuation orders have been issued for 22 counties in Florida, especially along the coast of the Big Bend region, where Idalia is expected to make landfall.
After wreaking havoc in Florida’s Big Bend region, Idalia has now moved on to lash Georgia.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, significant storm surges will continue to impact the Gulf coast of Florida until Wednesday evening.
The forecast indicates that Idalia’s core will bring damaging winds to southern Georgia and southern South Carolina within the hurricane warning area until Wednesday evening.
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency has reported that the Biden administration has deployed over 1,500 federal personnel and more than 540 urban search and rescue team personnel to assist in the affected areas.
