SEREMBAN: 59 undocumented migrants were detained by the Immigration Department in a three-hour operation in several areas here.
Negri Sembilan Immigration director Kennith Tan Ai Kiang said 961 foreigners were screened during the operation carried out in collaboration with the police and personnel from the Seremban City Council on Sunday (Feb 18).
“The raids were carried out in areas identified as hotspots in the city.
“The main offences were not having proper personal identification documents, abusing visit pass conditions and overstaying,” he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 19).
Tan said the majority of those detained were Myanmar nationals (21), followed by Bangladeshis (20), Nepalis (nine), Pakistanis (four), Indians (two) and one each from Indonesia, China and Uganda.
They were between 16 and 48 years of age.
He said some of them tried to flee but were apprehended.
“Some also pleaded with the officers to be released,” he said.
Tan said those detained would be sent to the Immigration depot in Lenggeng for further action.
He said Immigration will continue to carry out daily operations to ensure all foreign workers here had valid documents and did not violate provisions in the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966 and Immigration Regulations 1963.
“Immigration would also like to remind employers and the public not to hire or harbour any undocumented foreigner as action can be taken against you.
“We also welcome information from the public and this will be treated in the strictest confidence,” he added.
