ISKANDAR PUTERI: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the implementation of the “Imam Al-Nawawi’s 40 Hadith” appreciation module will help Muslim youth in Malaysia to understand the authentic teachings of Islam. He emphasized that the government is concerned about the current Islamic education system, which may lead the young Muslim generation to be easily influenced due to their incomplete understanding of the religion. The module aims to provide a strong foundation for Muslims, especially the younger generation, to master and comprehend Islam.

Anwar clarified that the module is not obligatory for non-Muslim students, and the goal is not to impose on them. He argued that if Islamic knowledge remains as limited as it is now, non-Muslims might mistakenly believe that cursing, slander, and making accusations are accepted practices in Islam. To prevent misunderstandings, Anwar stressed the need to study Islamic knowledge based on the Quran and the commentary of authoritative scholars.

Anwar made these remarks after attending a gathering with the unity government leadership at a hotel in Iskandar Puteri on August 25. He highlighted that the module is vital for the future stability, well-being, and harmony of Malaysia’s multiethnic and religious society. Anwar hoped that his explanation would dispel suspicions about the education system, asserting that the intention is not to force non-Muslims but rather to provide a deep understanding of Islam to Muslims.

In his speech, Anwar urged the non-Muslim community to perceive this initiative as a means to safeguard the future of the country. He warned that if Muslim children are not given proper religious education and understanding, they may fall into the hands of Islamic clerics who claim religious authority. The module’s implementation will involve 61 National Religious Secondary Schools (SMKA) and 228 Government-Aided Religious Schools (SABK) nationwide, according to Bernama.

In a statement released on August 25, the Education Ministry clarified that the module will only be implemented by Muslim teachers and students. It aims to foster values of courtesy, love, and strengthen religious understanding among Muslim educators and learners. The ministry believes that this initiative will contribute to the development of a morally upright and intelligent generation, focused on three key elements of manners, morality, and integrity.
