The Foreign Minister of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, revealed on Friday that he had spoken with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan regarding Canadian allegations accusing New Delhi of involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada in June.
The relationship between India and Canada has become strained recently, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks earlier this month, where he suggested that Indian government agents may have been connected to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India has vehemently denied these allegations from Canada, dismissing them as absurd. As a result, both countries have expelled a diplomat in a retaliatory diplomatic move.
A U.S. official confirmed that Secretary Blinken had a conversation with the Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar on Thursday, during which he urged India to cooperate with the Canadian investigation. However, the official statement released by the U.S. State Department did not mention this specific issue.
“During our conversation, I shared the U.S. views and assessments on this entire situation, and I provided them with a summary of the concerns that I had,” stated Jaishankar during an event at the Hudson Institute in Washington D.C.
