Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that his government is dedicated to the well-being of farmers and is focused on empowering them and turning them into entrepreneurs and exporters. This comes as thousands of farmers have been protesting, seeking better prices for their produce.

Modi made these remarks in response to the ongoing protests, which began last week. His comments were made just a few months before the upcoming general elections, where he is looking to secure a rare third term.

The protests, known as the ‘Delhi Chalo’ (Let’s Go to Delhi) campaign, have seen farmers from Punjab attempting to march to the capital for over a week, demanding legally binding higher prices for their crops, among other demands. They have been prevented from reaching the capital, with police using tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannon to stop them. Despite talks between farmers’ leaders and federal ministers, a resolution has not yet been reached.

Farmers decided to temporarily halt their campaign for two days following the death of a young protester, as officials investigate the cause of death. Over 100 leaders from various states will convene in Chandigarh to discuss the violence and future plans.

Modi took to social media to express his government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers, mentioning a recent cabinet decision to raise the floor price for sugar cane by 8%. This move benefits cane farmers in two states, although it does not directly impact the protesting farmers who grow rice and wheat.

During a public meeting in his home state of Gujarat, Modi emphasized the government’s focus on improving the lives of small farmers. He highlighted efforts to provide modern seeds and solar pumps to farmers, aiming to integrate them with modern technology and transform them into entrepreneurs and exporters.

Analysts warn that Modi’s party faces political risks if the protests spread to other states, potentially angering more influential farmers, who form a significant voting bloc, especially with elections looming. Similar protests in the past have forced Modi to repeal certain farm reform laws.

At the main protest site of Shambhu, on the border between Haryana and Punjab states, farmers continued to gather despite police presence. Additionally, the Indian government has ordered the removal of certain social media accounts and posts related to the protests, according to a statement by X.
