Dengue fever cases in Indonesia have seen a significant increase in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

The number of cases has reached 43,271 by the 12th week of 2024, with 343 reported deaths.

Masdalina Pane, head of the Professional Development Division of the Association of Indonesian Epidemiologists, noted that the rise in dengue cases began in November 2023 in various areas.

Pane expressed concern over the lack of a serious approach in controlling the outbreak, leading to its expansion and continuous increase in cases.

“The key indicator for controlling an outbreak is to prevent cases from rising and spreading. If cases and fatalities continue to increase, it signifies a failure in control measures with a significant number of victims,” Pane emphasized.

In response to the escalating situation, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the government had responded by providing larvicides and insecticides for dengue prevention efforts.

Sadikin also urged the public to actively participate in dengue prevention by eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, particularly by emptying standing water containers.
