In Indonesia, the election commission announced on Wednesday that Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto emerged victorious in the presidential election last month. With over 96 million out of roughly 164 million total votes, Prabowo, a three-time presidential candidate, secured a resounding win over former provincial governors Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who received approximately 41 million and 27 million votes respectively according to the final tally.
Prabowo is expected to succeed outgoing President Joko Widodo in October, marking a significant transition in the country’s leadership. Former special forces commander Prabowo capitalized on the continuity of Widodo’s platforms and leveraged social media platforms like TikTok to connect with Indonesia’s vast young voter demographic.
Despite his successful campaign, Prabowo’s journey to victory was not without controversies and concerns surrounding patronage politics due to his alliance with Widodo, also known as Jokowi. Widely accused of abusing his position to favor his former rival, Jokowi’s allies vehemently deny these allegations.
Adding to the political landscape, Prabowo chose Jokowi’s son Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his running mate, leading to speculation and intrigue. With a last-minute change in eligibility rules by a court presided over by Jokowi’s brother-in-law, Gibran is poised to assume the role of vice president, further cementing the ties between the two political figures.
Furthermore, the election commission disclosed that Indonesia’s largest party, PDI-P, secured the highest number of votes in the legislative elections held concurrently with the presidential poll. Following closely behind were the Golkar Party and Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, positioning them as significant players in the country’s political landscape moving forward.
The election results reflect a shifting political dynamic in Indonesia, signaling a change in leadership and the emergence of key players in the country’s political sphere. With Prabowo’s victory and the future transition of power from Widodo, Indonesia braces for a new era under its incoming leader.
