IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) will add more Trash4Cash automatic drive-through recycling centres in the city according to demand.
Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said currently there were two such centres in Manjoi and Taman Meru.
“We will see the response before adding more centres.
“There is no point in having supply over demand, as that does not achieve our purpose.
“The current centres are our testing ground before we expand the facility further,” he told reporters after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Majuperak Utilities Management Sdn Bhd here on Thursday (Aug 29).
The MOU was signed between the city council and the company to cooperate on the drive-through recycling centres.
Rumaizi signed on behalf of MBI, while the company was represented by its director Nor Nabila Shahira Md Zaini.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by MBI’s chief whip Datuk Mazlan Abd Rahman and the company’s chief executive officer Azmi Amin Sarji.
Rumaizi said the council had until 2027 to develop the drive-through centres.
“Since January last year until July this year, under the Trash4Cash programme, a total of 94,979.09kg of recycling items were collected from door-to-door involving 2,401 individuals.
“Via the drive-through programme, a total of 8,570.75kg items have been collected,” he added.
He said the first Trash4Cash drive-through centre in Manjoi was launched on March 19 last year, while the one in Taman Meru started operations in April this year.
“May all our efforts to turn the city into a Smart and Green City by 2030 be achieved, and the community mind transformation agenda towards cultivating the practice of recycling be successfully implemented,” he added.
Azmi said engagement with the community on recycling habits is essential.
He said there was still a need to create awareness on how to recycle items properly.
“However, for a start, we do see more people coming out to discard recyclables using the Trash4Cash centres,” he said.
