    Ipoh woman loses RM6.2mil in gold investment scam

    Reports from Perak reveal that a resident of Taman Rasi Jaya has been scammed out of approximately RM6.2mil in a fictitious investment scheme. The victim, a 61-year-old trader, only realized that she had been deceived when she was unable to withdraw funds from the supposed gold investment scheme.

    The Perak police chief, Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, stated that the victim lodged a report on Monday (Jan 22) after falling victim to the scheme. According to Comm Mohd Yusri, the victim discovered a post pertaining to the investment scheme on Facebook on Oct 14 and followed the link to the WhatsApp number of an unknown individual. Subsequently, she was added to a chat group for the scheme where she made 32 transactions into 11 different bank accounts, amounting to approximately RM6.2mil.

    Shortly after attempting to withdraw RM2.2mil on Monday, the victim realized that she could not access the investment platform. Comm Mohd Yusri emphasized that the case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

    Comm Mohd Yusri issued a warning to the public to exercise caution when encountering investment schemes on social media platforms. He mentioned that individuals who are faced with nonexistent investment schemes or have made transactions to a mule account can reach out to the National Scam Response Centre at 997. Additionally, individuals with inquiries about such crimes can contact the police Commercial Crime Investigation Department infoline at 013-211 1222 via WhatsApp between 8 am and 10 pm.
