DUBAI (Reuters) – According to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, Iran executed a man on Tuesday who was charged with killing a police officer and injuring five others by running them over with a car during a nationwide protest movement in 2022.
The death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022 ignited months of anti-government protests following her arrest for allegedly flouting the Islamic Republic’s mandatory dress code, marking the largest display of opposition to the authorities in years.
Mizan reported, “After being upheld by the Supreme Court, the death penalty against defendant Mohammad Ghobadlou has been implemented early this morning.”
In addition to the murder charge, Ghobadlou also received a death sentence for “corruption on earth”.
Amnesty International, however, claimed that Ghobadlou’s right to a fair trial was violated and that his bipolar condition was not considered by Iran’s judicial system.
“Ghobadlou received two death sentences after grossly unfair sham trials marred by torture-tainted ‘confessions’ and failure to order rigorous mental health assessments despite his mental disability,” Amnesty stated.
Mizan responded to these claims by saying that the defendant allegedly rejected the notion of having a mental disability during his trial.
