IPOH: A 39-year-old Iranian serving a 30-year jail term at the Tapah prison was caught with drugs during a routine check.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said on Wednesday (Aug 14) at about 1.15pm, a warden saw the suspect behaving in a suspicious manner by sitting alone facing a wall.

“When the officer approached the suspect, they saw him take something out of his pocket and he later threw a red coloured package on the floor,” said Comm Azizi

“When the officer checked the package, he found two translucent packets. One contained 46g of a yellow substance believed to be heroin, and another with 30g of a pink substance that is also believed to be heroin,” he added.

Comm Azizi said at a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here on Thursday (Aug 15) that checks revealed the suspect had been in prison since 2018 for a case under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He added that the suspect has 10 drug-related cases in his criminal record.

“The total value of the drugs seized is RM1,900, and can be used by 50 addicts,” said Comm Azmi.

“We are still investigating how the drugs were brought into the prison, and if the suspect had anything to do with the recent case of a drone carrying a laundry bag containing drugs that were discovered on the rooftop of one of the blocks of the Tapah prison,” he added.

Comm Azizi said the prison has tightened its search, monitoring and checks on the inmates.

“We will investigate from all angles, including the latest tactic of bringing in drugs using a drone to see if it is related in any way,” he said.
