Daylyy, a new social media platform, is slowly gaining attention for its unique concept that diverges from major players like Instagram. Unlike other social media platforms, Daylyy focuses on authenticity and realism rather than filters, heavily edited photos, likes, and comments. The creators describe it as a social platform for users to casually share pictures and videos as a daily content journal, emphasizing the journey and all the moments in between.
Since its launch in 2022, Daylyy has garnered 47,000 users across more than a hundred countries and is projected to reach 50,000 users by year-end, according to co-founder and CEO Austin Anderson.
What sets Daylyy apart is its deliberate avoidance of filters, which are extensively used on other platforms despite the harmful effects associated with them. On Daylyy, users can only publish photos taken directly with the app’s camera, preventing the sharing of modified photos or content.
Austin Anderson stated, “[Daylyy] is a true reflection of everyone’s daily life. It’s a real-time social media app. There’s never going to be filters, and you’re not going to see any uploads. You also won’t see things like vanity metrics or numbers. And, most importantly, no algorithm.”
As TikTok gained popularity, a trend towards greater authenticity in social media content emerged. Younger users, in particular, embraced unfiltered, natural, and less orchestrated content, contrary to the curated aesthetic of Instagram. Instagram has faced criticism for its new algorithm, and various studies have highlighted the detrimental effects of social media algorithms and filters on young people’s mental health.
Daylyy addresses one of the concerns faced by social media users—the anxiety over the popularity of their posts, quantified by “likes.” On Daylyy, users cannot view the number of “likes” on a post, and comments are less visible, with direct messages prioritized for communication.
In terms of monetization, social media users are posting and commenting less on their news feeds, as acknowledged by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. To address this, Instagram has developed specific channels for content creators to offer a more intimate and secure format. Daylyy aims to monetize its content, planning to introduce advertisements once it reaches a significant user base. Anderson stresses that the vision for advertisements is aligned with Daylyy’s principles of authenticity, expecting brands to capture real-time photos of their products to be on the “same playing field as everyone else.”
