In a recent statement, Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, highlighted the Islamic State branch known as ISIS-Khorasan as the biggest Islamist threat to security in the country. Following the mass shooting attack near Moscow, U.S. intelligence has linked ISIS-Khorasan to the incident, increasing concerns about potential threats.

Faeser emphasized that the threat level in Germany remains high, even before the tragic events in Moscow. The attack, carried out by gunmen in camouflage attire who opened fire on concertgoers, resulted in the deaths of at least 139 people and left 180 others injured. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

To enhance security measures, Germany will implement temporary border controls ahead of the 2024 European Championship, which the country will host this summer. Faeser stated, “Security is of course our top priority at this tournament,” given the large crowds expected to attend matches and public viewing events.

The European Championship is scheduled to begin on June 14, with an estimated 2.7 million fans attending stadiums and up to 12 million participating in public viewing events. Faeser reassured the public that security measures have been heightened within the police and intelligence services to ensure the safety of all participants.

The interior minister’s comments come amid growing concerns about the increasing threat posed by ISIS-Khorasan and other terrorist groups. The recent attack near Moscow serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that Europe faces from extremist organizations.

As Germany prepares to host a major international sporting event, authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent any security breaches or incidents. The temporary border controls will help monitor and regulate the movement of individuals entering the country during the tournament.

With security being a top priority, Faeser highlighted the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and intelligence services to ensure a comprehensive approach to counterterrorism efforts. The government is committed to maintaining a vigilant stance against any potential threats to public safety.

In conclusion, Faeser’s announcement underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Germany and other European nations in addressing the complex security threats posed by terrorist organizations like ISIS-Khorasan. The country remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard its citizens and visitors during the upcoming European Championship.
