TEHRAN: A funeral ceremony is underway in the Iranian capital for Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated by the Zionist Israeli regime in Tehran, Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported.
According to IRNA’s report, the ceremony to bid farewell to martyr Ismail Haniyeh started Thursday (Aug 1) morning at the University of Tehran.
Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will pray over the body of Haniyeh.
The office of the Supreme Leader said the funeral prayer will be held at the university premises before the march toward the Azadi Square.
Haniyeh was assassinated along with one of his bodyguards in their accommodation in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday (July 31).
The martyred Hamas chief was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has already announced three days of public mourning.
The Supreme Leader, in a message following the martyrdom of the head of the political office of Hamas, said, “The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime prepared the ground for a harsh punishment for itself with this act, and we consider it our duty to avenge his blood as he was martyred in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran”. – Bernama-IRNA
